Kast Upgrade Electronics

The electronics section of this manual contains descriptions of the overall wiring for the upgraded Kast Spectrograph.

Miscellaneous Controller Wiring, EL-3705

The miscellaneous wiring schematic contains wiring that doesn't fit anywhere else. The sheet is broken into controller 1 and controller 2, the top and bottom controllers respectively. First thing to note is that the Galil DMC-4080 controllers that we use have two J2 connectors on each controller! They are marked J2A-D and J2E-H. Thus, they are listed one below the other for each controller.
The first connection listed it the ELO, or Electronic Lock Out signal that connects to pin 5 of each J2. The switch is located on the right side panel above the stage connectors. The switch has 2 sets of DPST contacts. One set of contacts is wires to the top controller and the other is wired to the bottom controller. Operation of the ELO is somewhat complex so the Galil manual is quoted directly:

"ELO Input
If the ELO input on the controller is triggered, then the amplifier will be shut down at a hardware level, the motors will be essentially in a Motor Off (MO) state. TA3 will return a 3 and the #AMPERR routine will run when the ELO input is triggered. To recover from an ELO, an MO then SH must be issued, or the controller must be reset.

It is recommended that OE1 be used for all axes when the ELO is used in an application."

The rest of the connections on J2 are wired in a similar fashion. The LSCOM signal, Limit Switch COMmon, is connected to the +5V logic supply via the 5 volt terminal strip on the left side panel of the controller chassis. This supplies 5 volts to the internal optical isolators that connect to the stage limit switches and home signal. Similarly, the INCOM signal, INput COMmon, connects to the logic supply and powers the digital input isolators The OPWR and ORET connections provide the power for the high power digital outputs. These are connected to the 24V power supply that powers either the top or bottom controller. As noted in the table, the controller 5V connection in J2 are not used. However, the controller 5V is used for the encoders via the encoder connectors.

The connections for J3 are shown at the bottom of each table. On each controller an EL-1356 4-Channel Temperature Monitor board is attached directly to J3. The board currently supplies the temperature for its board mounted sensor via analog input AN1 on pin 2 and 24V supply monitoring on input AN4, pin 11.
