Barrel Signal Assignments

The barrel signal assignment section of this manual contains descriptions of the signal assignments for the DEIMOS Spectrograph. It corresponds to the Barrel Signal Assignment tab in the electronics schematics binder.

Signal Assignments, EL-3034

Schematic: schematics\OUT1.sch.pdf
Page last updated: June 20, 2002

Schematics EL-3034 through EL-3039 show the layout for one each of the Opto-22 relay racks used in the instrument electronics. The sheets have a block in the upper left-hand area that associates a channel number and a bit number with a function. The channel number gives the location of the I/O module on the individual rack. The bit number gives the I/O bit that the software can read or write and the function tells what the bit toggles or reads.
In the lower left area is a pictorial representation of the actual I/O rack. The drawing shows where the relays are and what their function is. It also tells what relay should be plugged into each slot. Notice that between each relay and its screw terminal is noted what color relay should be installed. The other important piece of information shown here is the position of the various bus bars. These are Sheet metal strips that are used to connect from two to eight terminals together.

On the right-hand side of the drawing is a table showing the destination or the output connections of the I/O relays. The first column gives the I/O bit for programming. The pin column refers to the screw terminals on the edges of the relay racks. The next three columns give the connector and pin numbers that the output is connected to. The sixth column tells what relay part number populates each position on the relay rack. The last column tells the function that the relay controls. On the right-hand side of the table are the channel numbers as labeled on the board.

Board #1 Controller #1 - Outputs

This board contains the following functions:

FCS LED: I/O bit 25 can be set to turn on the white LED used to illuminate the Flexure Compensation System CCDs. (More Info)

Bit 26 is not used.

SCSI-to-Fiber Power: Bit 27 turns on the BlackBox SCSI-to-Fiber convertor box in the TV camera system on. (More Info)

AIA-to-SCSI Power: Bit 28 turns on the Photometrics AIA-to-SCSI convertor box in the TV camera system on. (More Info)

Copper Lamp 2: Bit 29 turns on CuAr lamp 2 for the FCS system. (More Info)

Copper Lamp 1: Bit 30 turns on CuAr lamp 1 for the FCS system. (More Info)

TV On: Bit 31 turns on the Photometrics TV camera controller. (More Info)

Fans On: Bit 32 turns on the cooling fans in the barrel. (More Info)

OVER TEMP SHUTDOWN: Bit 33 controls the AC power connection to the locker. The instrument computer can cut the AC power if the temperature rises above 85 degrees F. in the locker. If this path fails there is a 85º F mechanical thermostat that can also shut down the locker. (More Info)

Calibration Lamps: (More Info)

Krypton: Bit 34 controls two of the AC outlets on the calibration lamp outlet assembly. A PenRay power supply is connected to each of these two outlets that power the two Krypton lamps. (More Info)

Xenon: Bit 35 controls two of the AC outlets on the calibration lamp outlet assembly. A PenRay power supply is connected to each of these two outlets that power the two Xenon lamps. (More Info)

Mercury: Bit 36 controls an AC outlet on the calibration lamp outlet assembly. A PenRay power supply is connected to the outlet that powers the Mercury lamp. (More Info)

Argon: Bit 37 controls an AC outlet on the calibration lamp outlet assembly. A PenRay power supply is connected to the outlet that powers the Argon lamp. (More Info)

Neon: Bit 38 controls an AC outlet on the calibration lamp outlet assembly. A PenRay power supply is connected to the outlet that powers the Neon lamp. (More Info)

Cadmium: Bit 39 controls an AC outlet on the calibration lamp outlet assembly. A PenRay power supply is connected to the outlet that powers the Cadmium lamp. (More Info)

Zinc: Bit 40 controls an AC outlet on the calibration lamp outlet assembly. A PenRay power supply is connected to the outlet that powers the Zinc lamp. (More Info)

Flat field: Bit 41 controls an AC outlet on the calibration lamp outlet assembly. An extrnsion cord is connected to the Quartz-Halogen flat field lamp. (More Info)

Bits 42 and 43 are not used.

Filter Wheel In Place: Bit 44. This relay powers the green In Place limit LED on the manual pushbutton station. (More Info)

Filter Wheel Moving: Bit 45. This relay powers the red Moving limit LED on the manual pushbutton station. (More Info)

Bits 46 - 48 are not used.
