Stepper Motor Driver Box, EL-4006

Schematic: schematics/HAM_II_drive_box_MK2_sh_1.pdf
Page last updated: March 11, 2010

The EL-4006 Stepper Motor Driver box performs the function of turning the Galil's direction and step signals into motor motion. The main contents of the driver box are a 24V, 150W power supply and an Applied Motion ST5-S stepper motor driver. The box also includes a cooling fan with a 85 degree F thermostatic switch and pass-thru wiring for stage limits, home, and index signals. Note that all connectors/connections are made at one end of the box. This is done to match the existing stage wiring of the original system.

A few words on the ST5-S driver: All technicians should read pages 3, and 6 and look at the specs of the ST5-S on pages 30 and 31 of the ST5-S user manual and also be aware of the error code chart on the last page of the manual. These are the most important things to keep in mind when troubleshooting any problems with the drive box. Also keep in mind that each ST5-S needs the correct parameters loaded to drive the different motors one the spectrograph. These parameters are loaded as follows:

  1. Connect to drive box via DB9 serial connector
  2. Apply power to drive box
  3. start the program: STConfig.exe
  4. in the Drive dropdown list select 'ST5-S'
  5. click on the 'File' menu item and select 'Open'
  6. select the stepper motor file to match the stage motor
  7. click on the 'Download to Drive' button near the bottom of the screen
